In blackjack the ace can have a value of 1 or 11. So if you have a 6 and an ace you can count your hand as worth 7 or seventeen. In this case the 17 is known as a soft 17. This is also important to the dealer as each casino will specify whether the dealer has to stand or hit on soft seventeen.
The house has a slight advantage if the dealer has to hit soft 17 so it is better for the player if the dealer must stand on soft 17.
